Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is becoming a more common problem as the pressures of life grow more challenging. Looking at the fallout from the recession, you can see increasing insecurity as people fight to keep a job, keep their homes, and put enough food on the table. Despite all the pressure, most cope well, but an increasingly significant number of people are falling into a pattern of anxiety. It does not have any specific cause. But the constant worrying slowly grows to disrupt everyday living, leaving people tired and irritable. Sleep becomes more elusive and they feel more restless. If this is you, it will probably have crept up on you. Can you remember when you last felt completely relaxed? Sure, there may be times when the level of worry drops. But when did you string more than one or two days of ease? Well, this is the time to go see a doctor. Your work and relationships are probably suffering. As an aside, the usual requirement for the disruption to life to have lasted for at least six months. To qualify as GAD, this must be a long-term problem and it must stand on its own — no phobias, panic attacks or problems with alcohol or drugs. Once GAD is diagnosed, the approach is to balance drugs against talk therapy. This is not an exact science. People react differently both to the diagnosis and to the various drugs. It may be appropriate to try an antidepressant first, or to use one of the benzodiazepines like Xanax. In part, the decision is based on the severity of the problems. The benzodiazepines are very effective over a short period of time. The antidepressants can be taken safely over longer periods. Once the mood is controlled, you can then move on to psychotherapy. This may be “simple” counseling or the more effective cognitive behavioral therapy. The aim is to give you practical coping skills. You must learn to confront your fears and take a more positive outlook. Although Xanax and the other drugs can calm your mind, the long-term solution comes from inside you. With willpower, you can conquer your anxiety and rebuild a good quality of life. Anything less than this risks dependence on drugs which is never a good outcome.

At what age do we start to experience life at its rawest? We are really never sheltered at any age from experiencing sadness, fear, shyness, grieving for the loss of a loved one, terminal disease, or abuse to name off a few of life’s true hard emotions.
Some individuals are able to live their life for many years without experiencing what it feels like to watch their father or mother grow sick over the years, never knowing from one day to the next if that will be their last day with them. Some never experience a horrible phone call that a loved one has been killed in an accident. Some of us can live for years without knowing primal fear. Fear from not knowing where the next dollar is going to come from, fear from abuse, fear from another individual wanting to cause harm, etc. Some may live many years without watching a loved one die a long, painful death from disease. Are you terrified of needing to speak in a public setting? Are you uncomfortable in larger groups? Does your heart race and your breaths shorten?
Being human, we all experience these emotions. From an infancy state to an adult state we are put in extremely challenging situations. How do you feel about your options available in dealing with these emotional situations? Do you feel that although situations we experience are devastating, everyone at one time or another deal with one or more of them? Do you feel that from the beginning of time these are emotions that all human kind has experienced? What options or methods were available even 50 years ago?
Within our day and age it doesn’t seem to matter how young or old someone may be every human behavior is becoming labeled. Innocent children who do not even have the mental capacity to speak in such terms are now being diagnosed with depression, anxiety, ADHD, ADD, and bipolar to name a few. Teenagers who are changing into adults are being labeled for all types of behavior. Adults who experience the brunt of life, society, and financially making it in this world are also being labeled for every emotion they may experience.
Today there is a pill for everything. We are being lead to believe that if we are sad, depressed, have a hard time sleeping, are having marital issues or going through a divorce, upset over our teenagers, frustrated financially; whatever the cause, we really need to get into our doctor and get on something to help us be able to deal with it. Any type of emotion that can now be diagnosed is done so by a psychiatrist or even a general practitioner. Once the situation is explained the doctor at that time will decide what would be the best treatment. There is no blood work done, no serious tests that are run to bring the doctor to the conclusion that an anti-psychotic drug should be taken.
Anti-psychotic drugs are being used for emotions that at one time where considered a normal emotion or reaction to an unpleasant series of events. Instead of taking the emotion in and learning from it, learning how we can grow stronger as an individual from a negative thing, how we can become a pillar to those around us; we are listening to a doctor give a best guess what would help get us through. Once given an anti-psychotic drug an individual is then “hooked” on them. They are instructed that they need to continue taking the medication. They will have adverse affects if they discontinue use without a doctor’s supervision. If one doesn’t work there is always another one to try.
Instead of being taught how to deal with emotions in a natural way people are being given drugs to numb themselves and the amazing brain we were all given. People have become so reliant on a doctor telling them what to do that they have missed accepting all different types of emotions as a part of our life and listening to their inner voice. People have been conditioned to put their faith in the FDA investigating all the different types of pharmaceuticals on the market. With this faith in place, the drugs that are prescribed are safe and side effects minimal.
Just as a child cannot express that they are depressed or anxious, a child would also not be able to tell if they were having adverse emotional reactions to the anti-psychotic drugs. In a sense children become the easiest pry for such drugs. With children, teens, and adults while taking one, side effects will happen. Another medication is then prescribed to off set the side effects but in return different side effects will happen. And then the snow ball begins and the patient is hooked and the money rolls in for the industry.
What about getting back to the basics in life? What about accepting all of life’s curve balls with the thought that “shit happens” and now we need to work at getting control of the situation? What about communicating with loved ones or friends, creating our own support circle for us to use as a sounding board? Non medicinal treatment of ADHD can cover anything from counselling, family therapy and child behavior modification. They all have one thing in common and that is that they aim to teach the child coping skills in managing day to day events, at school and in making friends. If the child is taught these, that is half the battle.

There is a popular program on Italian TV at the moment which is called ‘SOS Nanny’. Research at Lehigh

Through the same sort of behavioural support and child behavior modification approaches, the results were remarkable. Teachers too noticed them. Overall, the children displayed less aggression and there was an improvement in their social skills.
Results in the classroom
In the classroom, the improvement in these behaviours was even more noticeable and teachers found that literacy skills had improved by at least three times. It was found that they key to success was intervening at this early age. The results were lasting and the children are definitely much better equipped for life and much more likely to overcome the challenges associated with ADHD.
Academic tasks with teenagers
Another interesting approach, this time with teenagers with ADHD, as done at the Summer Teaching Program led by Dr Pelham and Dr Evans at the University of Buffalo. They found that when they taught these kids to take notes, there was a positive improvement in comprehension, longer attention span and much less disruptive behavior. They were able to tie this in with a behavioral program where there were very clear expectations of behavior linked with consequences and rewards. This is at the heart of any child behavior modification program.
So, there you have it. Most research has indicated the value of non medicinal treatment of ADHD especially in the field of behavioral studies. Parents have found that when this is combined with ADHD homeopathic remedies, the chances of a child overcoming ADHD with success and happiness is much greater than merely popping amphetamine pills!
