Panic and anxiety disorders are the most common mental health disorders. It’s estimated that one in four Americans will suffer debilitating anxiety during their life.  More than 80 million prescriptions for anti-anxiety medication are written annually in the US.

Social anxiety disorder is the most common anxiety disorder and the third most common mental illness in the US, impacting more than 19 million Americans.  People with social anxiety disorder, or social phobia, are overwhelmingly worried and self conscious in everyday social situations. They have an irrational fear of public embarrassment or disapproval, and avoid circumstances where they may be watched or judged by others.  They are extremely uncomfortable being the centre of attention or being around people they don’t know. They may blush, sweat, shake and have difficulty talking or making eye contact in social situations, experiencing nausea, muscle tension, palpitations and cold, clammy hands. These physical symptoms add to their fear of being noticed and criticized.

Social anxiety is much more intense and long-lasting than everyday shyness or nervousness, interfering with the ability to engage in even routine work, school and social situations. People with social anxiety struggle to do ordinary things like take public transit, enter a room with people in it, order and eat a meal in a restaurant, return an item to a store or use a public washroom. Social anxiety sufferers realize that their fears are out of proportion to the situation, and often suffer from low self esteem, social isolation and a lack of achievement, resulting in depression.  They may “self-medicate” with drugs and/or alcohol. Phobic individuals are twice as likely to be addicted to alcohol as people without phobias.

Social phobia most often arises in childhood, adolescence or young adulthood, affecting more women than men. The cause of social anxiety is not totally understood, but it’s believed to be a combination of factors including chemical changes in the brain, genetics, and environmental factors like stress or trauma. Early treatment is important to avoid needless distress and faster recovery. Left untreated, social phobia leaves sufferers avoiding social contact, limiting their personal and professional lives.

Fortunately, anxiety disorders are among the most treatable of mental health conditions. Social anxiety is commonly treated with a combination of medication and therapy. Antidepressant drugs are generally the medication of choice, in particular selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI’S) and SNRIs (serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors).  Antidepressants work by affecting the concentration and activity of neurotransmitters in the brain. Effexor, Celexa, Cymbalta, Prozac, Zoloft, and Paxil are all commonly prescribed for the treatment of anxiety disorders. Antidepressant medications address both anxiety and the depression that so often accompanies it. Some patients may be prescribed an anti-anxiety medication such as a benzodiazepine along with their antidepressant medication. If necessary, beta-blockers may also be prescribed to minimize physical anxiety symptoms such as shaking and a rapid heartbeat.

Combining antidepressant medicine with therapy offers the most effective and rapid relief. Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is considered the most effective psychotherapy for social phobia.  The cognitive component helps sufferers identify and change the thinking patterns causing them distress, such as “people are always watching and criticizing me”. The behavioral component helps them change their actions, such as avoiding or shutting down in stress-provoking situations.

Ironically, the very symptoms they need relief from, the lack of awareness around social phobia and the stigma of having a mental health diagnosis make it difficult for social anxiety sufferers to seek treatment. It’s estimated that less than one-third of the people who need help actually receive it.  As the condition usually arises in children and young people, it’s crucial that parents and educators recognize the difference between “shy” and a social phobia.

Most ADHD adults I know have great talents, intelligence and creativity. They can be funny and entertaining and they can be totally infuriating when they just fail to deliver on an appointment, a date, a phone call or a simple request. Organisational skills? Well, that certainly is a problem. Maybe ADHD coaching is the answer. Let’s see.

When we get to know ADHD and began to understand some of the problems, every piece of the jigsaw seems to fit into place. Jut think of an ADHD brain with faulty wiring connecting all those brain chemicals from working like clockwork! Just a slight problem. Some other people have likened this slight defect to a rather weak cell phone signal. They have problems with connecting the message so inattention, lack of concentration and general distraction all get in the way.

So, we have a problem. Can ADHD coaching fix it? Can an ADHD coach really help us to get to grips with setting goals, action plans, time management, cutting multi tasking and meeting deadlines. Certainly the corporate world is no help in its rather ambiguous attitudes. On the one hand, multi tasking is seen as a plus but when it comes to missing deadlines, the corporate monster turns into a rather angry bear!

So ADHD coaching is here to help us meet goals and challenges. A really good coach can help us to maximize our considerable talents and help us make up the shortfall caused by our minor individual difficulties and problems. That is the goal we should be working on with our coach.

How do we select a good coach and what should we insist that he or she does? Up to now, there are no official qualifications or credentials for an ADHD coach. This is very strange but nobody has yet got round to it. Maybe our legislators have been busy with the recession?

A coach will soon help us to set up routines. This could be for taking medication or simply performing regular tasks at work. He or she should also be able to help us set realistic goals and go through with us the action points we need to achieve those. He will help us in prioritizing and also techniques when we want to procrastinate! Then there are aspects of time management and other techniques which can halve the workload and save loads of time.

There are private organisations who train coaches. The best way is to get a recommendation from a trusted person, like your doctor or therapist or some personal recommendation from a friend so that you know the person is serious. After that it is just a question of assessing if the ADHD coaching is helping you to achieve your goals and you feel more comfortable in your work environment. It is only then that you can judge that you are going to get back in control and that you will never look back.

As regards focusing, there are homeopathic remedies which can you a helping hand. I have mentioned one or two of them on my website. These could give you that added advantage in giving you that extra edge in concentrating and being less distracted. Why not click through and see what it is all about. It is a great deal cheaper than ADHD coaching!

Fear is a completely natural feeling in response to objects or situations deemed threatening. Some scream at the sight of spiders. Some refuse to go under water for fear of drowning. And some sweat a lot when speaking in front of an audience. Most people experience minor fears every now and then. But for some people, such fears get out of hand, causing intense anxiety and affecting day-to-day life. Extreme and irrational fear, which occurs even if there’s little or no real threat, is more popularly known as phobia. About 19 million people in the United States have phobia.
Are you afraid that you have phobia? If you think you have it, the first thing you must do is to know the different phobia symptoms. When exposed to frightening objects or situations, people who have phobias suffer from an array of symptoms that are associated with anxiety, ranging from mild nervousness to a severe panic attack.
The main phobia symptoms include anxiety, severe and irrational fear, and avoidance behavior. People with phobia experience intense anxiety immediately after exposure to things or events that they are afraid of. Usually, anxiety escalates when you sense that it is hard to escape from it. Also, anxiety becomes more intense if the object you are scared of is closer to you. Several changes in the body occur because of intense anxiety, which include blushing, excessive sweating, diarrhea, stomach discomfort, palpitation, and muscle tension.
Severe and irrational fear happens when people with phobia anticipate or face a certain object, person, or situation that poses little or no danger. For instance, if you have acrophobia or fear of heights, you dread going to an elevated place because you might fall from it.
Avoidance behavior is also one of the major phobia symptoms. People with phobia avoid on purpose the objects or situations that they fear. They believe that avoiding those things can help keep the anxiety from happening.
The following is a list of other common phobia symptoms:
- Increased heart rate or palpitations- Sweating- Trembling- Discomfort in the chest area- Dizziness- Difficulty breathing- Feeling of choking- Hot or cold flashes- Loss of sensations- Fear of passing out- Fear of dying
People with blood-injection-injury phobia have different phobia symptoms from others. Aside from fear, you would also be disgusted at the sight of a needle or blood if you have this type of phobia. Blood pressure and heart rate increases like in other phobia types. However, dizziness, passing out, and nausea occur after the increase in blood pressure and heart rate.
Phobia is no cause for worry if it does not affect your day-to-day life that much. For example, if you have a dog phobia, then there will be no problem if you live in an area where you’re not likely to encounter dogs. But if the symptoms of phobia disrupts your normal life or prevents you from doing things that you enjoy, then you might need to seek professional help.

Tip #1: Aromatherapy
Lavender is a very popular scent, and has been used for a long time to help people relax and fall asleep. You can add a few drops of lavender oil to a tub of warm water to help you sleep better. You can also put a lavender sachet underneath your pillow as well.

Tip #2: Exercise
Light exercise can promote deep sleep during the night but just make sure that you do not exercise too much or too late, as this can increase your body’s level of adrenaline which adversely keeps your body and mind alert when you are ready to go to bed.

Tip #3: Listen to relaxing music or brainwave entrainment CDs
Relaxing music or brainwave entrainment CDs calm the nervous system and help you to relax. Listening to your favourite soft music can have a very calming effect, and Brainwave Entrainment CDs usually include calming water sounds, such as a running stream, or other nature noises specifically designed to take your mind off what is, or what has happened during the day.

Tip #4: Change in Diet
A change in diet can also play a role in lessening insomnia symptoms. Some diet changes include cutting caffeine from your diet. Caffeine has a very pronounced effect on your sleeping patterns, and does not only come from coffee but from other sources like chocolate, soda, cold medicine and other prescription medication. Avoiding sweets and eating foods that can help you sleep (such as carbohydrate snacks) can also be helpful.

I hope you have found this article to be good introduction for you to cure insomnia naturally. For more information, visit my website below.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is becoming a more common problem as the pressures of life grow more challenging. Looking at the fallout from the recession, you can see increasing insecurity as people fight to keep a job, keep their homes, and put enough food on the table. Despite all the pressure, most cope well, but an increasingly significant number of people are falling into a pattern of anxiety. It does not have any specific cause. But the constant worrying slowly grows to disrupt everyday living, leaving people tired and irritable. Sleep becomes more elusive and they feel more restless. If this is you, it will probably have crept up on you. Can you remember when you last felt completely relaxed? Sure, there may be times when the level of worry drops. But when did you string more than one or two days of ease? Well, this is the time to go see a doctor. Your work and relationships are probably suffering. You may be finding relief from the stress through alcohol or drugs. You may even have thought about death as a way out. Before things get too bad, get help. The treatment strategies are well established. You need not watch yourself slowly fall to pieces. Most people respond well to treatment. What happens when you do get an appointment? The first step is ruling out any physical cause for your mood problems. Thyroid disease and early signs of heart disease may not be obvious, but people are more anxious when they have a formal medical condition. Even small health problems can be picked up and amplified by your mind. Then there are standard psychological questionnaires. These have been approved by the American Psychiatric Association and are the tools for diagnosis accepted by the medical insurance industry for covering the cost of treatment. As an aside, the usual requirement for the disruption to life to have lasted for at least six months. To qualify as GAD, this must be a long-term problem and it must stand on its own — no phobias, panic attacks or problems with alcohol or drugs. Once GAD is diagnosed, the approach is to balance drugs against talk therapy. This is not an exact science. People react differently both to the diagnosis and to the various drugs. It may be appropriate to try an antidepressant first, or to use one of the benzodiazepines like Xanax. In part, the decision is based on the severity of the problems. The benzodiazepines are very effective over a short period of time. The antidepressants can be taken safely over longer periods. Once the mood is controlled, you can then move on to psychotherapy. This may be “simple” counseling or the more effective cognitive behavioral therapy. The aim is to give you practical coping skills. You must learn to confront your fears and take a more positive outlook. Although Xanax and the other drugs can calm your mind, the long-term solution comes from inside you. With willpower, you can conquer your anxiety and rebuild a good quality of life. Anything less than this risks dependence on drugs which is never a good outcome.

Most of us have heard about Lindsay Lohan opting for psychotherapy sessions to deal with her chemical dependency problem. The fact that the judge made it mandatory for her to attend these sessions proves that these sessions are indeed effective. One of the best ways to deal with several problems like loneliness, bi-polar disorder, anger management, anxiety, Asperger’s Syndrome, depression, social anxiety, and social phobias is to opt for group therapy.

There are two schools of thought with regard to the way in which the members of group therapy ought to be selected. One set of therapists believe that people with the same set of problems ought to be brought together so that they can sort the problem that unites them. Another set of therapists are of the opinion that people with different types of personal issues may be brought together for better solutions. In fact, they suggest that individuals from different background may be encouraged to seek solutions together.

Proponents of the set of therapists who suggest that group therapy should have people with similar problems such as anger or depression, feel that getting people with diverse personal issues will make it difficult for them to communicate with each other. However, experts who suggest that there ought to be people with diverse issues in group therapy sessions suggest that the very fact that there are people with different problems are present enables the participants to actually practice the things that they learn from the therapists.

As for the fact that group therapies with participants from various backgrounds have to work harder, these therapists say that the higher difficultly levels of adjustment ensures that people are better equipped to take on the challenges of real life where everyone has to deal with people of different backgrounds in rather tricky situations.

Another advantage of participating in a group therapy program where there are people from diverse walks of life is that the participants can learn from the experiences from others. While the therapists contributes the most because he is a professional, the fact remains that others in the group can also enable the group members of to learn by sharing experiences.

While deciding which therapist to go to, you must consider what kind of group therapy sessions he arranges because simply attending a few one-on-one sessions may not be enough to solve your problems because you will have to see how you behave among many people.

Recently Lindsay Lohan has been instructed to attend psychotherapy session because of abusing substances. It is important to keep several things in mind while choosing such a program because choosing the wrong program or therapist will not only result in loss of money and time, it could also aggravate your problem. You do not have to be in a bad fix like Lindsay Lohan who was struggling with a substance abuse problem to visit a therapist. You may opt for psychotherapy if you simply feel that you could improve your life by learning how to manage your time, emotions, and your relationships.

One of the things that we forget over the years is that we should constantly be developing if we wish to lead a happy life.

One of things that psychotherapy enables you to do is improve your social life. By understanding yourself you will be able to understand what kind of a friend you are. This in turn will enable you to understand whether you are likable or not. Once you find out what draws people to you, you will be able create the relationships that will bring value to your life.

Often people forget that they ought to evolve to deserve the space that they want in the lives of the people around them. Irrespective of whether you are dating, a young mother, or a person who is finding it difficult to deal with a habit like smoking; attending a psychotherapy program will help you to identify the problem that is keeping you to feel as happy as you can be.

It actually enables people to find long term solutions because temporary fixes like drugs or simply feeling better for some time will not really change the quality of your life. Unless you come to terms with the issues that are really holding you back, you will not be able sort the issues.

It is a good idea to opt for a psychotherapy program that includes some group sessions. Unless you get to practice what you have learnt from the therapists in a controlled environment, you will never feel confident enough to practice these things in real life.

You must not feel that you can’t afford psychotherapy because some of the better therapists are often willing to charge less than their usually fees for people who cannot otherwise afford therapy. It would be good idea to contact TriBeCa Therapy for holistic solutions for life problems.
