Panic attack symptoms are very intense and appear suddenly – with no warning and with no cause.
The attacks may include a couple or more of the following symptoms:
Nausea
Lightheadedness
An upset stomach
Numbness
Tingling
Dizziness
Chills
Hot Flashes
Sweating
Apprehension
Headache
Hyperventilation
Abdominal cramping
Tightness in the throat
Feelings of extreme dread or terror
A dream-like or trance-like state
A fear of losing control
A fear of doing something embarrassing
A sense of the need to escape
The specific symptoms vary from person to person, and the severity also varies. But many attack sufferers agree that the worst symptoms of all are increased breathing and an increased heart rate (a racing heart) or chest pains.
Why do many sufferers feel these are the worst symptoms? Because these symptoms are so intense that the individuals often fear that they are having a heart attack or that they will end up having a heart attack – especially if this is their first panic attack.
The good news, though, is that people do not usually die from panic attacks.
The medical and research communities do not know exactly why the heart races during one of these attacks. But, they do know how it is working.
Basically, the body releases a shot of adrenaline which travels through the sufferer’s whole body. This shot of adrenaline may sometimes be referred to as epinephrine. It causes the heart to be stimulated by the nervous system.
That means that the heart is pumping faster. The body is preparing for possible physical danger – even though danger is not actually present. The individual is mostly becoming more aware of their heart beating.
But, of course, anyone experiencing one of these attacks should learn more about them and should seek help from their doctor.
