Is it the snow, the cold, the slippery sidewalks, or is it something else they truly hate, and that is getting the winter blues because they always think there&#8217;s nothing to do. I have always loved the winter time, from when I was a kid to my present age, I don&#8217;t care much for the cost of the rising heat bill each year, but as far as the beauty of the winter scenery, I think it&#8217;s wonderful, truly a gift from God.</p>
<p>Do you like using computers ? Why not turn your hobby or activity into a paying one. If you are very familiar with computers maybe you are good enough to do simple repairs and upgrades for other computer owners. I never took a course on computer repair but I have, replaced video cards, sound cards, and internal modems and other devices. I have also disabled or enabled onboard video and sound cards on systems. Replacing or installing video cards, and other devices is pretty easy, they seem harder then they really are. Now, I am talking about desktop computers, not notebook or laptops, they are a whole different breed. </p>
<p>I am not going to go into the details on how to replace a video card or any other device, but I do want to state again, that I have used computers for years as a hobby, and I have replaced such items, including hard drives, myself with no problems at all, saving myself a few thousand dollars in repair costs over the years. I just learned by reading online instructions available on the internet, and by trying to do it myself. I got so good at computer repairs that folks at work started bringing in their systems for me to take home and fix for them, then they paid me when I had the job finished.</p>
<p>If you feel confident that you can replace video cards, sound cards, or do other such repairs, then by all means, why not turn your knowledge into a part time cash paying business, its a great bit of knowledge you have, that is not being used to it&#8217;s potential. You can always start honing your skills by working on damaged or outdated computers that are often thrown away, or sold for very little money at yard sales and flea markets. I have even had people pay me a few dollars to clean the dust out of their systems. All I had to do was open the case, with the system unplugged, and blow the dust and debris out that accumulates inside the cases over time. I use a can of compressed air, that does not freeze or make condensation, using the spray air that freezes or leaves moisture can damage the components. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s amazing how many people could not or did not want to remove the computer case and clean out the dust themselves, but instead they paid me to do it, I thought it was pretty neat making $20 for 10 minutes of work. This winter when you don&#8217;t have anything to do, brush up on your computer repair skills, and make some extra money, while you shake the winter blues.</p>

<p>The medicine that is commonly prescribed to people undergoing the alcohol detoxification program is chlordiazepoxide, a benzodiazepine drug. There are 4 goals that detoxification in alcohol aims for.</p>
<p>First, it provides you a safe withdrawal from alcohol dependence. Second, it provides humane treatment to protect your dignity. Third, it helps provide recovery of cognitive and affective faculties. Fourth, it prepares you for continued treatment program.</p>

<p><strong>General Anxiety Disorder</strong> is a very common condition that affects many of us at some time in our lives. At any one time it is estimated that over 10 million people in the US suffer from some form of GAD. Many are actively seeking treatment through medication or some form of psychotherapy, either online or in-person.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>What can I do to help manage my Anxiety?</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Through my work with clients both in the office and online I find Mindfulness-based therapy to be the most direct and effective for helping people change the underlying patterns of emotional and cognitive reactivity that sustain the emotional suffering of anxiety and depression. I describe some of the highlights of this approach that you can apply by yourself to work with your anxieties.</p>

<p> </p>
<p><strong>Reframe the emotion</strong></p>
<p> </p>
<p>When an emotion arises, whether anxiety or fear, anger, frustration or feeling overwhelmed, our habitual reaction is to become identified with our thoughts and emotions. We literally become the emotion when we say, &#8220;I am angry,&#8221; &#8220;I am sad,&#8221; &#8220;I am afraid.&#8221; This problem of identification causes our identity, the &#8220;I&#8221;, to collapse into the contracted state of the emotion, thought, traumatic memory or other mental objects that arise. This leads to suffering and this process of identification simply feeds and strengthens the emotional reaction.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>We can stop the process by simply reframing the experience from, &#8220;I am…&#8221; to &#8220;I notice the feeling of …within me.&#8221; In a very real sense, we keep the &#8220;I&#8221; separate from the contents of mind and prevent it from contracting into the emotion. Now the emotion or memory or thought simply becomes and object within the mind that I can observe through careful attention (mindfulness). This has a powerful effect in creating a space around the emotion that is essential for allowing the emotion to change and resolve itself. It also keeps you in touch with the &#8220;real&#8221; you, which is not the contents of your mind, but the consciousness that contains them. You are not your thoughts.</p>

<p><strong>Welcome the Emotion</strong></p>
<p> </p>
<p>This is a strange thing to ask! Get rid of it, avoid it, resist it yes…but welcome it?</p>
<p>It has been shown over and over again that resistance and confrontation are ineffective tools for healing inner emotional suffering. Acceptance and non-violence are far more likely to help. Why? Because it is only by looking that we can ever hope to learn and see what needs to change and reactivity always inhibits this process.</p>
<p>What we are actually practicing is compassion: Compassion with those parts of our mind that are suffering and in pain. Compassion is what these emotions need more than anything, and more than our ineffective attempts to control them or &#8220;fix&#8221; them. A common saying in Buddhist psychology is that the greatest gift we can give to another person is our kindness and friendship. We understand this well enough in our relationship with people, yet do we extend the same friendship to our emotional suffering? No. Instead we do everything we can to get rid of it or push it away. Can you imagine the chaos that would create if we did this with our unruly children? Emotional suffering is very much like an inner child that is in pain. Our inner child needs our attention and kindness in the same way that a real child needs our love when in pain.</p>
<p>We must learn to smile at our emotional suffering, not fight it and create more suffering. It is difficult, but so is fighting the pain. One of these options has a chance of producing healing.</p>

<p> </p>
<p><strong>Sit with the Emotion</strong></p>
<p> </p>
<p>Just as with guests as they arrive at the door, it is not sufficient to just welcome them and then ignore them, preferring to engage in some other more pleasant activity. After a handshake, we invite them to sit down and then we sit down with them and give them our full attention. In Mindfulness Practice and Meditation we practice &#8220;sitting with the emotion&#8221; in the same way, giving full attention to the feelings behind the emotion. We cultivate a relationship with our inner emotions in which we listen with an open mind and with curiosity and interest. But of course, we watch very closely at the tendency of the emotion to suck us in. Becoming the emotion, becoming reactive and identifying with the emotion is not helpful. Imagine being with a friend in need. He or she needs you to be present for them and here their pain, not to become equally upset and reactive. To help, there must be space and stillness so that we can see the more subtle structure of our emotions and only then can we begin to see how we can help resolve the situation. This is an exercise in patience and stillness, but you will be surprised at the powerful effect that this can have. The power of listening is greatly undervalued in contemporary society, yet how can anything change if we do not listen in this way, with mindfulness?</p>

<p><strong>Ask the Emotion, &#8220;How can I help you?&#8221;</strong></p>
<p> </p>
<p>Along with mindfulness, we bring an intentionality to heal. This is called compassion or metta in Buddhist psychology. When we couple the desire to help with the open listening of mindfulness then the emotion will begin to express its needs. But, as said already, this voice is weak and timid and so we must listen very intently. What the hurt may need is nothing more than to know that someone cares &#8211; that you care and that you are willing to stay with the inner pain and not abandon it. Most of our suffering has endured a lifetime of being abandoned; now is the time to do something very different. Anxiety, fear, trauma, anger; they all respond to compassion, to genuine care and love and they will heal in direct proportion to the metta that you bring to them.</p>

<p><strong>Re-visit your Emotions often</strong></p>
<p> </p>
<p>As with a person, one visit is not enough to establish a friendship and a working relationship. You must choose to come back to the emotion many times &#8211; not to become overwhelmed or identified, not to become lost in thinking about the emotion and worrying, but to come back to the emotion and sit with it yet again &#8211; as a friend. Each time you touch the emotion with mindfulness and compassion it will soften and become malleable and begin to change. You are creating the ideal conditions in which suffering can heal, and it will heal by itself if allowed to change, just as ignorance and reactivity will prevent it changing.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>You might think that you are unable to help a friend or family member who is experiencing a mental health crisis, but there are a number of things you can do to help somebody suffering from this problem. Below are a number of steps and strategies you can take to provide help to someone going through a mental health crisis.</p>
<p><strong>The Action Plan</strong></p>
<p>Mental Health First Aid teaches a five-step action plan, ALGEE,  for individuals to provide help to someone who may be in crisis.</p>
<p>- Assess for risk of suicide or harm<br />- Listen nonjudgmentally<br />- Give reassurance and information<br />- Encourage appropriate professional help<br />- Encourage self-help and other support strategies</p>
<p><strong>Assess for Risk of Suicide or Harm:</strong></p>
<p>When helping a person going through a mental health crisis, it is important look for signs of suicidal thoughts and behaviors and/or non-suicidal self-injury.</p>
<p>Some Warning Signs of Suicide Include:<br />- Threatening to hurt or kill oneself<br />- Seeking access to means to hurt or kill oneself<br />- Talking or writing about death, dying or suicide<br />- Feeling Hopeless<br />- Acting Recklessly or engaging in risky activities<br />- Increased use of alcohol or drugs<br />- Withdrawing from family, friends, or society<br />- Appearing agitated or angry<br />- Having a dramatic change in mood</p>
<p>Always seek emergency medical help if the person&#8217;s life is in immediate danger.  If you have reason to believe someone may be actively suicidal, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK (8255).</p>
<p><strong>Listening Nonjudgmentally</strong></p>
<p>It may seem simple, but the ability to listen and have a meaningful conversation with an individual requires skill and patience.  It is important to make an individual feel respected, accepted, and understood.   Mental Health First Aid teaches individuals to use a set of verbal and nonverbal skills to engage in appropriate conversation -such as open body posture, comfortable eye contact and other listening strategies.</p>
<p><strong>Give Reassurance and Information</strong></p>
<p>It is important for individuals to recognize that mental illnesses are real, treatable illnesses from which people can and do recover.  When having a conversation with someone whom you believe may be experiencing symptoms of a mental illness, it is important to approach the conversation with respect and dignity for that individual and to not blame the individual for his or her symptoms.</p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org/cs/in_your_community"> Mental Health First Aid </a>teaches you helpful information and resources you can offer to someone to provide consistent emotional support and practical help.</p>
<p><strong>Encourage Appropriate Professional Help</strong></p>
<p>There are a variety of mental health and substance use professionals who can offer help when someone is in crisis or may be experiencing the signs of symptoms of a mental illness.</p>
<p>-Types of Professionals</p>
<p>Doctors (primary care physicians or psychiatrists)<br />
Social workers, counselors, and other mental health<br />professionals<br />
Certified peer specialists</p>
<p>-Types of Professional Help</p>
<p>&#8220;Talk&#8221; therapies<br />

<p><strong>Encourage Self-Help and Other Support Strategies</strong></p>
<p>There are many ways individuals who may be experiencing symptoms of a mental illness can contribute to their own recovery and wellness.</p>
<p>These strategies may include:<br />-    Exercise<br />-    Relaxation and Meditation<br />-    Participating in peer support groups<br />-    Self-help books based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)<br />-    Engaging with family, friends, faith, and other social networks</p>
<p>With this information and these strategies in mind, you will be well-equipped to help a friend or family member going through a mental health crisis. It is important to be patient and understanding, but most of all, it is important that you are there for this person in any way needed.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It is so simple, yet so much fun.  Jumping is a great way for your child to have fun, do something healthy and gain confidence.</p>
<p>Finding activities that children enjoy can often be a challenge.  Often children with Autism may struggle with co-ordination or other physical challenges that make it hard for them to participate in sports.  This often causes them to loose interest in sport related activities and can lower self esteem.</p>
<p>Consider Jumping!  The physical act of jumping for most children is simple and individual enough that they are able to excel and in turn gain new physical capabilities and confidence. So how do you turn a simple jump in to an activity?  Use your imagination.  Invent games or imaginary worlds. </p>
<p>Most autistic children have great imaginations and enjoy inventing stories or worlds.  Imagine walking through a magical forest, having to jump over logs or to enter the castle.   Possibly a game to see who can jump the fastest in 10 seconds or who can jump the furthest or highest.</p>
<p>The most important key is to be sure to make it FUN.  If you are competing in any way, let the child win most of the time!  Be aware of the child&#8217;s feelings and what they want to do.  Try to adapt the activity to what they are interested in, not dictating the entire exercise having to happen a certain way. </p>
<p>Over time, the child will develop greater interest, confidence and you can start to shape the activities to further improve the child&#8217;s skill.&#8217; It is also important to regularly participate to keep the child interested, but not too often as this may be overwhelming. </p>
<p>Variety is important to keep it interesting and the activity should be focused on the concept of the game or story, not the physical act of jumping.  For example, you may ask your child &#8220;Do you want to play the magical castle game?&#8221; (which is actually the lets practice jumping and have fun at the same time game).</p>
<p>Jumping may seem simple, but that is the beauty of it &#8211; a child can make good progress in a non-competitive environment.  Using a little creativity they can learn, gain physical ability and confidence and new interest in sports related activities.  </p>
<p>Most sports benefit from jumping, either directly such as basketball, or indirectly as jumping can assist with co-ordination and running.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.disorderscentral.com/reactive-attachment-disorder.html"><strong>Reactive attachment disorder</strong></a> is serious and rare condition that affects babies and young children causing them to fail to create a bond with their parents or other close caregivers.</p>
<p>This condition generally affects children that have been subject to some sort of neglect or abuse or that have been moved from one caregiver to another such as is typical of foster homes. This often results because a child&#8217;s basic needs of being comforted, shown affection and nurtured are left unfulfilled thus preventing the child from allowing the natural bond to grow. This condition may have a permanent effect on the child&#8217;s development because it can change how a child&#8217;s brain works thus making it difficult to establish healthy relationships in the future.</p>
</p>
<p>This type of disorder is lifelong however with treatment children that are affected can learn to develop healthy relationships. Some treatments for this disorder often include counseling with a psychologist for the child and education for the caregiver or parent of the child.</p>
<p>Some of the symptoms that may be present in babies include being withdrawn or sad, lack of smiling, not reaching out when picked up, disinterested in playing with toys, not using their eyes to follow others in a room, being calm when left alone and participating in self comforting behaviors such as rocking.</p>
<p>Although there are noticeable signs of reactive attachment disorder in older children as well they may be somewhat different from the symptoms of this disorder that are seen in babies. Some of the symptoms that may be seen in older children ranging from toddlers to adolescents include withdrawal, aggressive behavior, watching others closely but not participating in social interaction, refusal to ask for help, showing obvious feelings of discomfort of awkwardness, hiding feelings of anger, drug or alcohol abuse in adolescents and avoiding or ignoring gestures of comfort.</p>
<p>There has not been much research on the effects of this condition beyond early childhood however it is suggested that it may lead to aggressive or controlling behavior as well as issues relating to other individuals as well as other problems. Treatment may help this condition however because this is a lifelong problem the changes these children endure will most likely create permanent obstacles making future relationships difficult at best.</p>
<p>If your child shows any of the signs of this condition such as preferring not to be held, avoiding you or seeming disinterested in you, excessively plays alone, doesn&#8217;t not look for physical contact or goes easily to strangers then you should consider taking your child to a health care professional in order to get a professional diagnosis and begin a treatment plan.</p>
<p>The exact reason why some children develop reactive attachment disorder while others in the same situation or circumstances do not however some factors that increase the risk of an infant or child developing this disorder include children who have multiple caregivers such as is the case when a child is moved from one foster home to another. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Most people do not consider an anxiety attack anything to worry about.  And in most cases, they are right in presuming so – unless the attacks are frequent and increase in intensity over the years.  For a fraction of people who experience anxiety, an anxiety disorder is a part of their lives as much as brushing their teeth and doing their laundry.  Unfortunately, living with anxiety disorder is not as easy to cope with as either.</p>
<p>An anxiety disorder can be severely disrupting to normal life.  While anxiety is a very normal occurrence, especially when you are in a highly demanding lifestyle, an anxiety disorder is a different thing altogether.  An anxiety disorder can be typified by irrational and unexpected feelings of anxiety or panic that happen frequently or a desire to isolation.  These emotions are often overwhelming to the person experiencing it and may induce such feelings of unprecedented fear that they may even be afraid to leave their homes or &#8220;safe&#8221; places.</p>
<p>Before deciding on any anxiety attack cures, you need to know the different manifestations of anxiety disorders.  These include:</p>
<p>Panic disorder.  This includes sudden feelings of fear that come without warning.  People suffering from a panic disorder may show physical signs of distress like intense perspiration, quickened heartbeat or breathing difficulties.  Often, the person will feel as if he or she is having a heart attack.<br />
Obsessive-compulsive disorder or OCD.  OCD patients have a consistent fear or obsession with doing routine tasks repeatedly.  It could be the mundane job of switching off the lights over and over again or locking and unlocking the door several times.  Their obsession with doing the task repeatedly is one way of getting rid of their fears (or so their minds tell them).<br />
Post-traumatic stress disorder.  This often comes after a severe traumatic event such as abuse or assault, or intense grief.  Unlike patients suffering from panic disorder and OCD, people experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder are often emotionally numb.  Like all the rest, however, their reactions to the disorder can have dangerous repercussions.<br />
Social anxiety disorder.  The least severe of all disorders, those suffering from a social anxiety disorder are constantly worried and self-conscious about being in their social situations.  This is often connected to a low self-esteem and a lack of self-confidence. </p>
<p>Having to live with an anxiety or panic disorder is no easy task.  To cope with sudden emotions that become an obstacle to you doing your daily tasks is an interference that involves not just your life but your job and survival, and in more serious cases, the lives of those around you.  Fortunately, there are prescribed medications for panic disorder that can help in alleviating these emotions to a much lower level that will be within your control.</p>
<p>Treatment for reducing a person&#8217;s anxiety disorder can be done in two basic ways – there is the purely medical method and then there is the more holistic approach.</p>
<p>The medical method involves medications for panic disorder.  These include prescriptive drugs like anti-depressants which are effective in reducing your stress levels.  These medications are often prescribed for an initial period of one or two years before they are gradually decreased to lessen dependence.</p>
<p>The other way to get treatment for an anxiety disorder is with a more holistic approach.  This refers to you taking a more pro-active role in regaining control over your own emotions.  This includes:</p>
<p>-          Attending counseling sessions with an experienced counselor.  It does not matter if it is a religious counselor or psychotherapist.  What matters is that you talk your anxieties out to someone who can offer positive moral support and suggest ideas on overcoming your fears internally.</p>
<p>-          Meditation and yoga.  Sometimes, talking it out is not enough – facing your fears and coming to terms with them may require some kind of an internal look at what you really are anxious about and facing them bit by bit until you acknowledge your fears without being afraid.  This can be done through meditation and yoga.  The slow movements of yoga complement the deep breathing and quiet contemplative mental exercise of meditation.</p>
<p>-          Applying the Time-Off policy.  Sometimes, all that is needed is to schedule a Time Off every day.  This means a specific time allocated each day for doing absolutely nothing stressful – it could be getting immersed in a hobby you enjoy like building toy trains or a massage.  For women, it could be getting a regular mani-pedi at a favorite spa with a close friend.</p>
<p>It never hurts to see a qualified person for any overwhelming anxious feelings you might be going through.  It could be a pastor at your church, a psychologist or guidance counselor.  Whoever it is, you need the emotional support that they can offer.</p>
