Anxiety medication can come in many types, and the one that Is right for you should be decided by both you and your physician or psychiatrist. Anxiety can be a serious disorder, one that can end up affecting all areas of your life if you do not seek treatment. Medication is usually only part of the treatment ordered by the doctor, and the other part normally consists of therapy to help deal with the thought processes and behaviors that can make anxiety appear or worsen. Sometimes antidepressants are used to treat anxiety, but these drugs may take a little longer to get in your system and be effective than other drugs that are known as anti-anxiety drugs.

Anxiety medication can include a class of drugs known as Benzodiazepines, and these are usually used for quick relief from anxiety symptoms. This class of drugs includes Valium, Ativan, Xanax, and Klonopin, and these drugs have been used for anxiety the longest because they are so effective. The problem with using these medications is that some of them can become habit forming. They slow down your central nervous system and relax you. These are effective, but they can also lessen your feelings, both of joy and of pain.

Anxiety medications can also include traditional antidepressants as well as beta blockers. Both of these drug classes have significantly lower dependence problems, but are effective, especially when antidepressants are used over longer periods to treat anxiety. Buspirone has shown to be effective as well. This drug is a mild tranquilizer that can help lessen and eliminate anxiety, but it is slow to act and may take a couple of weeks to show significant effects on your anxiety. This medication acts by increasing the serotonin in your brain and reducing the levels of dopamine at the same time. There is a small addiction potential with this newer drug, but it is much smaller than with benzodiazepines, plus it does not sedate you as much and your concentration and memory is not affected.
